Funny thing observational bias, you see what you expect to see.
When a company decides they want to create their own website in house this factor is something that plays out a lot. They use a platform like wordpress, then spend ages looking at just the right theme for it.
I expect you've seen where I'm going with this, somehow they end up with something very similar to what everyone else has. The theme they have chosen looks 'right', 'safe', feels familiar and there's a good reason for that.
If you want to break out of that it takes a bit of self awareness and experience. Which is why you employ a designer who can create something genuinley unique to yourselves. Yes it will cost you a bit more than doing it in house, but then it's likely to have a greater impact too.
